This seafaring series on pirates is proving popular plunder for young collectors. The final coin features William Kidd, who was born in Scotland around 1645. Kidd was a privateer accused of turning to piracy in the Indian Ocean.
Commissioned as a privateer by a syndicate of powerful noblemen, Kidd sailed in search of pirates and French shipping, capturing the Quedah Merchant, a heavily-laden Indian ship sailing under the French flag.
Kidd not only lost much of the treasure when his crew mutinied, but was betrayed by his backers when the Indian authorities complained. Branded a pirate, he was hanged in London in 1701, but legends about his pirate hoard refused to die.
